From tree to spoon
River learned about spoon carving in 2016 and hasn’t looked back. With only an axe and knives he transforms fallen or pruned trees and limbs from our wood lot into beautiful, functional spoons.
He has also since built a foot-powered bowl lathe, modeled after the lathes the Vikings used, and has begun to learn the process of turning bowls using ancient methods.
Learning and using these traditional methods and tools allows him to feel a greater connection to the material being worked and the resulting wooden wares have a warmth and depth of character that bring joy to those who use them.
Everything River makes is meant to be used and, with minimal care, can last for years.
